The best way to gain motivation is to stop talking and start doing. Get off your butt and do something. Here are a few quick tips to get you started (for more depth, read about the Science of Motivation):
1. Work Out
Running, lifting, working the heavy bag, sparring – whatever exercise you do, keep it going. Getting your blood moving and keeping your muscles warm promotes energy, confidence, and helps you gain motivation.
2. Organize Something
Boring, yes. Effective, also yes. Motivation is compounded by momentum, which can start by completing just about anything, but organizing something has a double effect – you build momentum and get rid of a situation that could slow that momentum. Two birds, one clean room.
3. Drink Coffee
Sleep as we all know, is a poor substitute for coffee. There’s a lot of anti-caffeine literature out there, but there are also Harvard studies that prove that coffee is healthy (google it, it’s true I swear). Don’t like coffee? Grab an energy drink, anything that will give you a kick and get you going.
4. Punch Something
Almost always works. Stop being a wuss and hit something – something not hard.
5. Set Mini-Goals
Piece of paper. Pen. Simple as that. Or open your laptop, that works too. Setting goals helps your mind gain motivation, which will in turn, help your body gain motivation.
6. Get in the Sun
Darkness is only motivating if you’re a ninja. Otherwise it just makes you sleepy. Sleep does not equal energy or motivation.
The sun on the other hand, gets you up and going with vitamin D, heat, and light. Why do you think Hemingway loved clean, well-lit places? Because it kept him from blowing his brains out… Almost…
7. Go to Bed on Time
Wonder why it takes four cups of coffee and an espresso to wake up in the morning? Pay attention and take note of the exact time you start getting tired. Your body usually knows how much sleep you need better than you do, and does a good job signalling you. When it does, do yourself a favor – go to bed.
8. Reward Yourself
Ice cream does wonders for motivation, especially if you worked out like a maniac that week.
NOTE: If you’ve been a lazy slob it will have an opposite effect.
9. Call in Backup
A friend in need is a pest, but only if that friend isn’t really a friend in the first place.
10. Listen to Your Favorite Music
Whatever music that pumps you up. No disco weirdo.
